That there have been so many haircuts (some radical) in the last year is no coincidence. We already said that coming out of confinement and the possibility of going to the hairdresser would lead to many changes of look. It would add a third moment to that universal theory that says that there are two key episodes in a woman's life in which she wants a change of look: after giving birth and after a breakup.
All this allows us to affirm that haircuts can change the mood and can be a catalyst for positive feelings in our lives. Obviously, a haircut is not the solution to problems, but we should not underestimate its emotional power since it can be one more tool to work on our well-being in another way. We spoke with two image psychologists, Elena Dapra and Domingo Delgado, and with the sociologist Alicia Aradilla, to elaborate the list of reasons why a change of look also it makes us feel better.
Hair brings a lot of well-being (and if you're wrong, it grows)
Seeing ourselves well, with a comfortable haircut, consistent with our way of being and with what we want to express, is also healthy on an emotional level. “The good thing about hair is that small actions achieve a lot of well-being. Also, then it grows back. Haircuts can be a reflection of processes of inner change. In the same way as getting a tattoo, it is recommended that you have finished that process of inner change so as not to get what I call 'a tattoo of emotion', with your hair. There is no need to wait for the change process to finish. Just stop and count to 10 before doing it,” explains Dapra.
It is one more tool in a process of internal change
For Elena Dapra, there is a clear reason for so many look changes during confinement. “During the pandemic, we have been left defenseless. We haven't been able to do anything about the situation. We wanted to overcome this phase, that things were different. When we are generating an internal change, hair can also be the external expression of that change. In the end you want to move, not stay in the same place, and the hair is an easy and cheap change ”, she points out. In fact, Erika Boldrin, who cut off her long hair just after the lockdown, explains it like this: «Let's say that during the quarantine something broke in me and after confinement, in summer, I cut it off ”.
It can be another way to work on self-esteem
Obviously, the work on self-confidence and self-esteem is not just a matter of hair, but in some way it also helps. Yale University has already confirmed that hair can make us feel more confident and stronger and Elena Dapra affirms that when self-esteem is being worked on, everything happens naturally and a change of look can also come. “The exterior is always a reflection of the interior. It is not banal how we comb our hair, how we put on makeup, how we walk… », she adds.
But it shouldn't be a quick patch
In line with the above, it is interesting to point out what Domingo Delgado insists on. “Changing your hairstyle or color is the fastest tool to see ourselves different and if we hit the nail on the head of how we want to see ourselves on the outside, it acts as a 'quick self-esteem patch'. It can certainly make us feel better in the short term, but its effects do not last over time. Hence, sometimes we get 'hooked' on aesthetic changes precisely because of that express feeling of apparent achievement. What does have an impact at a deeper level is understanding what leads us to seek a change of image and knowing if physical appearance is the key to satisfying psychological needs or not: fun, self-affirmation, affection, security, confidence, being seen, success, influencing others, transcendence… Everything counts, and it is important to know where we need to intervene, inside? Outside? Or in both? And satisfy these deficiencies in the best possible way. The advantage is that the physical aspect will always let us know how we are on the inside.”
It can indicate that something is happening inside us
If we talk about hair and emotions, we usually cut our hair as a result of an inner change. But the reflection that Domingo Delgado makes on those occasions in which change may be giving other signs is interesting. “ Sometimes the change of image comes before the awareness of what happens inside us, perhaps because we are not yet ready to realize what we really need”, he explains.
Hair is a sociological indicator (and a way of working on personal branding)
“What do you want to communicate to the world?” With these questions, Dapra reflects on how a haircut also helps to work on a personal brand. Something that is related to the affirmations of the sociologist Alicia Aradilla, which explains the sociological nature of hair. “Hair can be related to a great variety of events and at the same time it can tell us a lot about lifestyle, social relations, power relations, identity. Hair has been, and is, a key sociological indicator. For example: it can be a badge of status, from the men's wigs of the English or French court to those that can be seen today in court; a mechanism of social control: by shaving the hair of soldiers, prisoners and other institutions, even a connection with the spiritual world for some social groups.”
Cutting your hair is an act that can shake you inside
With these words, the model Vanesa Lorenzo explains what it means for her to change her look: “When one has been identifying with a look for some time, changing it means seeing yourself with different eyes. And you have to be ready for that. To play and not give it much importance. Just and necessary. Hair is one of the great “accessories” with which we can beautify ourselves. For me, daring to cut my hair is linked to a state of maturity, and not being afraid of losing the look of long hair that identified me, now I want to play with it from a more free state."
